A Native American woman has never played on the U.S. hockey team at the Winter Games. Abby Roque will end that drought next month at the Beijing Olympics. Her journey is revealed in the article Podcast: Meet Abby Roque, the first Indigenous woman on U.S. Olympic hockey team. From the article:

"Although her mother tried to get her into figure skating, Roque was drawn to hockey. She would often play with friends on the rink that her dad built in their backyard. When she started playing organized hockey, there were no teams for girls, so she played with the boys instead. In high school, she made the boys' team — as a freshman."

You can hear Roque share her story in this episode of the NBC podcast, "My New Favorite Olympian"

As a player on the 2022 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team, Roque will be sporting a new uniform announced in late November. Jerseys and hoodies will feature a horizontal band with a field of stars around the entirety of the garments with “USA” written within it in white with red trim.
