American-born Jeremy Smith Goaltends on Chinese Team

American-born Jeremy Smith to Be in Goal for Chinese Olympic Team

Walter WebbJan 28, '22

Yesterday China announced their roster for the Beijing Olympics Men's Ice Hockey Team.1 As anticipated in a prior post, American-born Jeremy Smith is expected to be the goaltender for the Chinese team. Smith played for the Chinese-backed team Kunlun Red Star for the past two years. The 25 man Chinese team has 11 other players from North America. China's first game is against the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team on February 10th.

As noted in the earlier post, "It would seem strange to see American-born Jeremy Smith wearing a red Chinese jersey or hoodie in Beijing. Smith was born in Dearborn, Michigan in 1989. He played in the Ontario Hockey League (a major junior hockey league) from 2005-2009. From 2009-2019 he played in the professional American Hockey League (AHL) with several different teams. He began playing for Kunlun in 2019, possibly with an eye on the Olympics."
